The 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 32nd edition of the French race and took place on June 20 and 21, 1964. After the 1955 tragedy with 85 deaths due to the accident of Pierre Levegh's car, the Circuit de la Sarthe was reduced in 1956 to a length of 13.461 km. Furthermore, the pit area were increased and improved to ensure greater safety. It was also the ninth race in that year's World Prototype Sports Championship.
After trying the previous year unsuccessfully to acquire Ferrari, Ford decided to compete with the “Commendatore” and fans named that challenge the Ferrari-Ford War.
